Auditions
Next Scheduled Auditions: January, 2011
How It Works:
Auditions for all JMU a cappella groups are held at the Music Building on the same dates. Auditions are held towards the beginning of every fall semester, and occasionally in the spring semester if needed. If you intend to audition, you must do so on one of the initial audition nights posted. Specific dates for each year's auditions vary, but will be in early- to mid-September or January. You may audition for as many a cappella groups as you would like for which you are eligible. If you receive a call-back invitation from any of the groups, you will attend the call-back audition on the night specified, and will then be notified whether or not you made the group. Most importantly, do not be intimidated! We would love to hear you, even if you are unsure. Please come out! For more specific information on times and dates, please check back here often as auditions draw near!
Your audition will consist of several components to give us an idea of where you'd fit in our group. These may include:
Sight Singing - You'll be given the sheet music to a short section (several measures) of a piece which we'll ask you to sing for us.
Tonal Memory - You'll hear a series of pitches played on the piano, and you sing them back to us.
Range Testing - We will have you sing some scales to give us an idea of what voice part you would sing.
Prepare a song - Before you arrive at your audition, come prepared with a section of a song to sing for us that will show off your solo voice. A verse and a chorus is sufficient, we're looking for 30 seconds to a minute. Please try to select a popular song that we might be familiar with.
Vocal Percussion (optional) - If you have any beatboxing or vocal percussion abilities, you'll have an opportunity to show us your stuff. Don't worry though, you won't be dinged if you can't.
Lastly, you should know that auditions night can be very long, especially if you're auditioning for multiple groups, but it's also a ton of fun. It's a great way to meet new people and get involved in something new. We look forward to meeting you and hearing your audition!
